1:00 PM – Workshop: Introduction to the Music Industry (Professional Music Publishing Association):
This workshop is designed for anyone who wants to understand the basics of the music industry in Quebec: the differences between sound recordings, musical works, and performances; the various industry players, associations, and rights management organizations; and the different types of rights involved.
3:30 PM – SOCAN 101: Understanding Music Rights and Royalties:
The world of music rights and royalties is often complex. This free presentation offers an overview of SOCAN, Canada’s largest music rights organization, and its role in the music industry and ecosystem. SOCAN represents the rights of music creators and publishers for compositions—music and lyrics—so if you’re a songwriter, composer, or digital music producer, this session is for you. Learn the difference between performance rights and reproduction rights, and how to collect the money you’re entitled to for your work.
Being a SOCAN member comes with many benefits, including access to valuable resources, funding opportunities, and support from SOCAN’s creative relations and member services teams. As a SOCAN member, you’ll be part of a network of talented songwriters, producers, composers, and music publishers like Drake, The Weeknd, Charlotte Cardin, Jean Leloup, and more than 175,000 creators and professionals striving to build careers with their extraordinary creative talent.
Bring your questions—we’ll answer them after the presentation.
For a complete experience, explore an exclusive program for artists and professionals as part of the PRO section of Le Phoque OFF festival on February 16 and 17, 2025. Gain access to these enriching activities with the Phoque OFF PRO subscription available here: pro.phoqueoff.com.
